Our Allentown Band principal clarinetist played a Silver Bet for many years. Beautiful timbre. I believe it was their finest professional metal clarinet.

I can't be sure about the wooden version but the metal 3-Star clarinet were student models. I can't be sure about the date of manufacture since no record exist that I know of but I believe the company stopped making instruments around 1955.

Many instruments (especially at the low end of the food chain) lack/lacked serial numbers.

Just to clarify: The 3-Star and the Silva-Bet were different models. The 3-Star was sold as a student model. The Silva-Bet was promoted as a professional model. (FWIW -- I'm an amateur and choosing my words carefully there, because although I own a couple of metal Silva-Bets and I like them for jazz, I don't believe professional classical musicians have ever regarded Silva-Bets as appropriate for orchestras.)

The owner of the French website on metal clarinets says that Silva-Bets were used in professional orchestras. I just got a Silva-Bet A restored and it's excellent.

But the Three-Star is a C-B student model. $50 is a very reasonable and appropriate price for one.
