I recently finished my all state performance and our clinician had a strange point. He told us we should try to research who our private teacher's private teacher is back as far as you can and you may find that you are indirectly learning from a famous musician. My Private teacher's private teacher was David Etheridge and His known private teacher was Robert Marcellus. Now i'm looking to find who Robert Marcellus's private teacher was. Anyone have any ideas? I know Robert Marcellus is pretty famous but I want to see how far I can track back.
This is getting pretty exciting!

It is my understanding that Robert Marcellus first teacher was Earl Handlon of the Minneapolis Symphony who in turn was a student of Grizez when he was in Minneapolis. Robert Marcellus later studied with Daniel Bonade, the great clarinetist of the Philadelphia orchestra. I also studied with Earl Handlon, "a serious teacher", for a few years in the late 40s and still feel his influence. You may wish to do an internet search for Marcellus.

I understand that Bonade studied with Ferdinand Capelle, who studied with Henri Le Febvre, who studied with Cyril Rose (of Rose Etudes fame); Bonade may have studied with Le Febvre, as well. I'd also heard that Bonade acquired Cyril Rose's clarinet.

David Etheridge was my teacher. His private teachers were Val Henrich, Dick Joiner, Jerry Neil Smith and finally Stanley Hasty. To my knowledge Dave didn't formally study with Robert Marcellus.
