My HS musical is West Side Story this year, and I'm playing the Reed 3 Part in the Orchestra....Needless to say I'll be doing a lot of transposing with Flute, Oboe, and English Horn parts all written in this book, along with Bass Clar. and Tenor Sax. Anyway, what I'm wondering about is this: at the end of one of the songs there is a High F trilled to a High G, and I can't seem to find a good fingering to use for this. Any suggestions?

This is actually a very simple trill. Play altissimo F as thumb, register key, 2nd finger of left hand, third finger of left hand, C#/G# key, and the right hand Ab/Eb key. I.e. use the "normal chromatic" scale fingering for the high F. Then trill simply by moving the 2nd finger up and down. The other fingers don't move at all.
Or if you are using the "long F" finger for the altissimo F (thumb, register key, left hand fingers 1,2, and 3, the C#/G# key, and fingers 1,2, and 3 of the right hand), simply trill by moving fingers 2 and 3 of the left hand.

Just wait until you get to the "Cool" fugue...tons of fun. I performed it last week with some dancers and the clarinet part- as well as all the other woodwind parts- is extremely difficult. Just try doing a flutter tone on an altissimo A flat.

have fun---I played the reed 4 part...we didn't transpose, we just learned the other instruments and split the parts up among people who could play it. (luckily reed 4 is all clarinet parts --bass, Bb soprano, Eb soprano)

hmph, ive always wanted to do west side story....i double on all woodwinds(except bassoon)...picc/flute, Bb/alto/bass clarinet, soprano/alto/tenor/bari sax, and oboe, ive alwayswanted to do a show with a lot of doubling :] right now were doing Peter Pan...im playing oboe, and there are some really neat oboe/english horn parts
