Hello Matt,
Welcome to the world of REEDS!!!! Try not to use n brand new reed. It takes a little time to prepare a reed. I usually put a reed in a REED-WELL By Hagen to soak the wholw reed for about 20 min. Then play on it for about 10 min. Then if it plays you will be a lucky person. But you should have at least 2-4 reeds already broken-in before you would want to use a new one on a concert.
Good Luck,
Miles

Dont get obsessed with preparing reeds. Soaking them is fine and even rushing/ sanding is ok to a limited extent. I manage to get nearly 100% out of a box of van dorens as a professional player and closer to 100% from la voz without too much mucking around. Dont use too hard a reed strength especially in chamber music you tone will become edgier and airier when you really need to blend in with a small group of instruments.

An old film canister works for soaking reeds too. And if you're using Vandorens, realize that you're going to get at least two or three clunkers per box. Some will improve after adjustment, but some reeds are beyond hope.
