It's official: I am now too old to hear an Ab clarinet.
All I notice are strings. Too many years near a flightline took their toll.

I guess the point is not to hear the Ab so much. It's been said that Stokowski had written in flute doubling the first violins on many things to obtain that Philadelphia "shimmer."

Thanks for posting a link to the CD description -- I'll have to get this one now.
That sample you linked is a piece in D and G major, so I imagine this is a really a high G clarinet... playing in those keys on an Ab clarinet wouldn't be much fun!
