strange question-
if i were to design a woodwind instrument for a science project:
1) to make the sound- i can use a clarinet type mouthpiece, or what other types of sound producers are there?
2) can i just poke holes in a tube, or do i need to mesure them based on sound vibration
3)ok, lets say i get different tones out of it- how do i tell what sound is what note?

1. A clarinet or sax mouthpiece would be one way. An double reed from an oboe,English horn or bassoon would be another way.
2. It all depends on whether you want the instrument to be in-tune with itself. If the objective is just noise,it doesn't really matter,does it?
3.Use a tuner to determine what pitch each note is, or check it against a known performer, such a s a keyboard or maybe another clarinet.

You could use a single-reed mouthpiece like a sax or clarinet, a double reed like an oboe or bassoon, blow across a hole like a flute or shakuhachi, or blow into a fipple like a recorder or pennywhistle. Not to mention free reeds like accordions and harmonicas.
You can control the pitch by poking holes in a tube, but why not be creative? Alter the air volume of a chamber partly filled with water (I heard a magnificent rendition of "Pop Goes the Weasel" on turkey basters), or change the Helmholtz frequency with random holes like an ocarina, or learn to get a range of notes out of a beer bottle by partly blocking the neck with your tongue, or make some kind of slide like a slide whistle or like a trombone. Admit a variable mixture of helium into the resonating tube/chamber. Put a reed on a brass instrument. Use stretchy tubing. Make something that plays 19 or 31 different notes per octave. Design a mechanism that uses piano keyboard fingering on a clarinet body.
In fact, do everything I would do if only it were easier . . .
