In an old thread about Copland's Rodeo Melanie wrote about the Bass clarinet part: "...and a really weird high solo out of nowhere in Hoedown". Can anyone tell me how high it is and in which way weird?

Our community band read through it a couple of times this past fall. I can't say that I recall too many details, but nothing struck me as being weird and I think the highest notes hovered around the top of the staff. Maybe Melanie meant "weird" in the sense that it wasn't necessarily melodic. There are some important alternating low notes in the bass part. Perhaps someone who is more familiar with playing the piece will give you more detail.

Hi Simone!
I don't remember how high the solo actually went. It is in the full orchestral version, though I imagine it would be the same in the band arrangement. It wasn't too terribly high, but I don't remember the specifics. I only know that it didn't really seem to fit in with much, and this was at the time I was playing a particularly persnickety bass and it was questionable whether some notes would even come out. I coaxed that baby into a nice performance and then gave it back to the school for an overhaul If you want, I can check in our library for the part
