Well, my big audition is tomorrow - for the University of Iowa School of Music. And for scholarships. I'm prepared, i know that, but i'm still realllllllllllllly nervous. Terrified is a better word to use there. I had a lesson today and my teacher thinks i'm ready to go, that i have a really nice sound and i'm doing some really good stuff musically w/ the piece. I'm playing the Adagio of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto on Bb, and Sonata in A Minor/Marcello for bass - of which i've played exactly 4 times since all state auditions in October.. Lucky me, i get to leave at 6 am in order to get into town in plenty of time. I'm very stressed... then the very next day i have to go up to UNI and meet the rest of my jazz band for the UNI Tallcorn Jazz Fest at like 11am. I'm seriously ready to have a heart attack.. or a nervous breakdown... or both.

Sweetie, you've obviously persevered and prepared to the best of your ability, you've given it your best and that's all you should ever ask of yourself. The ultimate goal is always to get better "than yourself" and not worry about what anyone else is doing. You apparently know your bass solo "cold" so that's in the bag, you'll play it brilliantly and with cool confidence. I'd arrive an hour before audition time, find a quiet practice room away from everyone if you can. Go through your regular warm-up routine on both horns, get your reeds working, maybe play through both works ONCE or spend a few minutes hitting the tricky passages. DON'T beat your chops into the ground, your hands are always their most limber/flexible early on, the longer you play the more they begin to break down. Then get off the horns, find somewhere quiet and RELAX, read a favorite novel, any peaceful diversion to clear your head. And, ESPECIALLY don't hang around the practice rooms and listen to other players warming up or auditioning...you don't need any distractions. Keep your horns warm right before you go in, walk in and start focusing on the job at hand, perform with a "check me out attitude", they're there to listen to YOU, command their attention. By the way, congratulations on making your audition, Iowa is a fine college and has a great music program. <:--))

Remember the people auditioning you are not wearing any pants. This will either make you throw up or laugh and probably forget any nerves you have about the playing part.
