Hello, I live out of state from my family and I would like to make a recording of me playing my clarinet and then post this file on my website for my family to hear. Can anyone give me suggestions on a piece of software suitable for something like this. Of course I'd like to make the file as small as possible while still retaining as much quality as possible. I get some pretty good recordings but the wav files are HUGE! Thanks for the help...

I like Cool Edit, and I'm sure there are other popular recorders that will be recommended, like GoldWave. You may be able to get a trial version on the following web site. The site also has other recording/playing software, for popular operating systems.

Whatever format you use, you might try using "winzip" to compress the files and shorten download time and disk space. Generally (at least for graphics files) the less compact the format, the more compression is possible. A secondary benefit is that a number of individual files can be combined into one zipped file. Of course, both parties must have the winzip program installed. This is shareware and available as a download.

You should squeeze the file to the MP3 format. There are plugins available for any browser (if not already installed) and the format has no hearable loss (at least not for home made recordings). There are free MP3 encoders, look for BladeEncoder in the net.
If you record with a computer mic in your work room, you will have a dull and dry sound. Most sound software can enhance that with a little bit of echo (pssst - that is a secret).

To add to what Jim said., you could also use stuffit, which works as well as winzip and is freeware.
