thanks everyone for all the replies on my selmer playing flat. ok, whats a tuning ring? will it go on the barrells that came with my clarinet? does ww bb have them?

Selmer makes some rather short barrels for the Selmer Sig, I think.
Most of the Chadash barrels should do as well, around 65mm or 64mm.

Yes, I bought my Buffet Tuning rings from WW&BW ... they were $8 or &10. They go inside the barrel. I have always pout them at the BOTTOM end of the barrel, just as you would "pull out". (its for that reason thatg many people don't buy them, they just _pull out_). I like to be scientific in my pulling out ! mw

I've used tuning rings before and they are great, sometimes they even add to your tone, don't ask why, that's just what I hear.
Tuning rings don't only simulate pulling out but with clarinets there often is a small gap between the bore of the barrel and the bore of the joint below, so they seal this too.
Peter Spriggs is one of the sponsors here and I believe there is a link to his page from here. Anyways, he sells them in a variety of sizes for about $1.70 so why pay $10! This cheap price will also give you the freedom to find the right one.
They are inserted right in the bottom of the barrel and they aren't permanent either, so it isn't a risk at all.

Tuning rings are only useful if you are sharp. They won't do a thing for you if you are flat when the barrel is pushed all the way in.

thats what i was thinking dee. cuz they would make the barrel longer and i would need something shorter, right? then, do i look into those tuning barrels despite the 2 barrels that came with my clarinet?

Do you play flat even with the shorter barrel? That would be most unusual and would indicate that you need to do a more thorough investigation of your problem before going off and buying an even shorter barrel.

My assumption in prior posts has been that Jan had a situation where a) using the 64.5mm barrel she was flat & b) using the 62.5mm she was sharp. This is what I encountered when I "strapped on" my Borbeck 12 & Vandoren v-12 #4 & gave a blow for my tuner. The same thing has apparanetly happened to others as well..
If Jan is flat with the Signature's *SHORTER* barrel (e.g. the 62.5mm) something (else) is not right.

it plays flat using the short barrel...according to my band director. but i just got back from clarinet choir and this director said its fine and not to worry about it that i wont get a much shorter barrel. someone there mentioned profile 88 tends to cause flatness? i use vandoren 5rvlyre prof.88. i dunno...i guess i'll just sound flat for band. :( it will be embarassing but...maybe i should try some different mouthpieces.

My teacher has lots of mouthpieces --- she's very nice & will loan (occasionally)loan out equipment for students to try out. In fact, that is what led me to my Borbeck mouthpiece (I tried a spare she uses -- its a good idea to disinfect before & after use). I bet your Band Director has a mouthpiece or two you could try as well. Look for something "middle of the road" & give that tuner another whirl. Let us know how it works out, too.
