 Ladies Night Off (?)

It looks like, except for the harpist, the Vienna Phil gave all of their "girl" players the night off on New Years.

There was a female cellist.

Glenn.....was it the hair that convinced you....LOL. I finally saw the woman harpist but never got to the cellist. I wonder how many "under 50" were in the audience.

Glen -

I think the woman sitting near the back on the right was an audience member on a stage seat. I didn't see any female player except the harpist.

You know I was wondering the same thing.

But their was a BETTER story on stage (for all you jingoistic Americans out there). Fairly recently there were three (at least) auditions for trombone, all won by the same young boy from Texas. Finally, the Philharmoniker decided that further auditions would just be embarrassing and gave him the chair. The stories filtering out are that if he had been even close to tying with a European, the European would have gotten it. Also the Texas boy had little if any orchestral experience here which the Viennese looked at as a plus !!!!

What a delight that concert was!

It seems that, back in the 60s and 70s, TV offerred many more opportunities to watch excellent orchestral performances with well-choreographed camera shots.

Apparently little changes in Vienna. In 1971 or so they toured the US with all men except for the harp.

Ken - I must have been fooled by the hair.

Is the concert on-line? If so, I'll look again.

The current Vienna Philharmonic roster http://www.wienerphilharmoniker.at/index.php?set_language=en&cccpage=musicians lists one female 1st violinist, one 2nd violinist, one violist, one cellist and the harpist. However, the cellist is only in the Vienna Opera Orchestra.

Better than it used to be, but not much.

I noticed this too - I always like to catch this concert but it seemed as if the gradual increase in female members had slipped backwards this year.

Vanessa.
