<b>Berthold, (1) Georg Jakob</b> (<i>b</i> Speyer 15 May 1824; <i>d ibid</i> 20 September 1904) WWI, BI <i>fl</i> Speyer 1849-1894. Descended from five generations of turners;1843-46 apprentice to J.S. Stengel (see STENGEL, Bayreuth); subsequently working in Paris, München; then journeyed on foot to Wien, where he worked two years with F. Hell; 1849 established in Speyer; 1882 workforce of eight reported; 1893 in partnership with his two sons; 1894 retired. Only relatively few Bls were produced; according to Altenburg, made alto flute to BOEHM's specifications; <i>c</i>1875 clarinets in ivory; his <i>c</i>1875 HASENEIR-model contrabassoon/contrabassophon was one of several experiments in papier mâché; his `Wanderbrief' (journeyman's record-book) is preserved at D-Speyer. Partnership of (1) with his three sons Friedrich Wilhelm (Fritz) (<i>b</i> Speyer 27 July 1854; <i>d ibid</i> 10 May 1937), flute specialist, Johann Wilhelm (<i>b</i> Speyer 18 August 1855; <i>d ibid</i> 21 August 1937), clarinet and oboe specialist and Georg Daniel (<i>b</i> Speyer 7 July 1857; <i>d ibid</i> 21 May 1937), bassoon specialist; 1883 established; from 1920s the business started to decline; 1937 dissolved shortly before the death of all three sons. Among the wide range of instruments made were: <i>p</i>1889 double A/Bb clarinet with single mouthpiece designed by LÄSSIG; <i>c</i>1900 oboe d'amore for Bach performances; 1911 english horn in ivory.
