I just came into a set of clarinets and I am trying to find some history
on them. I was told that they came from the collection of a former professor
of music at Harvard, that past on around the turn of the century. There are
only a couple of markings. "Berthold & Soehne" "Speier". I have 3, in A,
B, C, keys. Numbers on them are on the A is 6245, the B is 6246, the C is 6248. They are in great shape made of wood and brass. If you can help me with any history on these at all I would appreciate it. Even if you have heard of the manufacture and where they are lor were located will help.
Thanks in advance,
Reid
p.s. I am trying to find out who the owner of the set from Harvard was.

The one marked "B" is almost certainly in Bb. This was a common marking convention. I would guess that they were made in Germany as Speier is a German city.

There is an oboe listed on the "America's Shrine to Music Museum" page which is also made by Berthold & Soehne of Speier-am-Rhein. That means the city of Speier on the Rhine river.
