 Wurlitzer Boehm Barrel

Does anyone know anything about a Wurlitzer boehm system barrel?

I just saw a video about a clarinettist that uses one on his Selmer Recital. He sounds great and just wanted to know a little about it.

I suggest sending a note to Eric Seddon, who posts frequently as "MarlboroughMan" on this board. He works for Wurlitzer Clarinets America and probably knows more about them than anyone here. You can find his contact info here: http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/profile.html?f=1&id=8585

Hi Clarinetero,

Eric Seddon from Wurlitzer Clarinets America here. I'm wondering if the player you heard is using a Wurlitzer/Komsta mouthpiece and barrel combination? We're offering these for those players who can't afford to make a full switch to Wurlitzer Reform Boehms yet, but who want to get closer to the sound (or begin making the transition to German embouchure). The barrels are designed by Wojciech Komsta specifically to allow Wurlitzer mouthpieces on French instruments.

As for using a Wurlitzer barrel on a Selmer Recital--that's something I've never done, though I used to own a Recital A and tried many combinations.

Would you post the link for us?

As SteveG said, please feel free to email me through address in my profile if you have an questions.

Eric

Eric do you think those wurlitzer barrels will fit on a rossi clarinet?

I'm not sure if Wojciech Komsta, the designer and maker of this barrel, has made one for Rossis yet, though I think he has worked with Selmer and Buffets. I got your email, though, and I'll forward it on for you.

Thanks for your interest,

Eric

Eric,
Does the end result sound more 'German'? Are there any intonation issues?
Chris.

Hi Chris,

The major benefit is the use of a more relaxed, German embouchure, which helps flexibility.

As to intonation, that's the real acheivement of Wojciech Komsta, who designs the barrels--he's made it so you can play a Wurlitzer on a French Boehm without poor intonation. Ordinary, this just won't work.

From the reports we've gotten, though, the sound is more focused, the embouchure more relaxed, flexibility enhanced, and intonation has been fine in professional settings (including orchestral playing).

One of the biggest challenges for players switching from French Boehm to Wurlitzer is the embouchure difference. If that isn't approached immediately and given all the time and diligence it needs, the player will result in intonation problems, and other set backs. It's a more relaxed, music-focused (rather than mechanics-focused) way of playing, and this system Wojciech has devised seems to make it much easier to switch over--while your R-Bs are being built, you can already begin to practice embouchure. That's a big advantage.

Here is the link of the video I saw:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5miLGehfxNM&feature=share

I found this video on facebook and the description said about the Wurlitzer barrel, but there is nothing on the video description.

One question:

- To use this new barrel you need to use a Wurlitzer mouthpiece, which means one needs to change the whole embouchure to actually make the barrel work properly, right?

In my experience the new barrel is needed to properly fit a German mpc on a French instrument. The tenon sock will be wider to fit the German mpc and the length will problably a little shorter to compensate the lowering in pitch caused by the longer facing / larger chamber of the mpc.

When properly adapted you don't need to change your whole embouchure.
The internal tuning of the instrument does not change.
A big change will only be needed if you change to Wurlitzer instruments.

Clarinetero : in the picture of the video you saw, it seems that the barrel on the clarinet is a Paulus zoom-birne (zoom-barrel) that are used by many german players on their Wurlitzer german system.

Clarinetero,

I think Lam is right; this isn't a barrel we sell. As for embouchure, if Jeroen has experience with a Wurlitzer/Komsta mouthpiece and barrel combination, his opinion will be best.

All the best,

Eric

Isn't the barrel on the picture the adjustable ones that Wenzel Fuch have been used lately?

Eric -

Stock Buffet barrels are cylindrical, but nearly all tweakers and customizers of French clarinets all put a reverse "Moennig" taper in the bore. Kalmen Opperman, who made my barrels, also put a slight flare at the bottom, creating a "wasp-waist" profile. He said that the bore shape was different for every barrel length, so an adjustable-length barrel was impossible to make.

Are Oehler and Reform Boehm barrels perfectly cylindrical? If not, I wonder how well an adjustable barrel could work. All the ones I've tried on my Buffets have been dreadful.

Ken--

Good question. "Perfectly cylindral" is tough for me to answer, and I don't want to mislead you. I'm no engineer and don't have the equipment to measure, but I will say that my R-B barrels are "very" cylindrical, if that helps--by that I mean noticably moreso than the Chadash I have.

My natural inclination is to be with Kal on this one (but it's pretty easy to agree with a guy who was himself briliant in this area, eh?). I've never tried one of those adjustable ones, though. If Fuchs is using one, well...that raises my interest.
