So...what'd Santa leave for the resident clarinetist?
Author: sfalexi

In my household, nothing! Not a bad thing, but other hobbies took a priority, and I'm pretty well content with my current clarinet setup and items. Just need to practice! Did anyone else find a nice surprise under the tree this year?

A new metronome, loads of sheet music from the boyfriend, and my father made me an instrument stand for my Bb, A and Eb.

Well, since we have essentially given up buying each other presents years ago (although I did buy my wife a nice field guide to Sierra flora and fauna), everything clarinet that I have purchased over the past month or so have been my "Christmas Presents" (as my wife has pointed out on an occasion or two):

A Nice Yamaha 72 ($499 on eBay)

Box of Reed Rush (a major disappointment, IMO).

An adjustable thumb rest and some thumb cushions

A used Selmer HS* as a spare for my back up clarinets (eBay)

Used ligatures: BG Revelation and Bonade inverted (eBay)

A selection of cork sheets for tenon and key pad repairs (last repair, a leaky M13 mouthpiece tenon)

Earlier in the year I purchased a couple of pairs of reading glasses , since my trifocals weren't working well for reading music. One pair pure reading glasses, one pair of bifocals with only a .4 inch space at the top for distance - as in Band conductor. (a twofer sale at Sears)

And I made myself a neck strap with some old outdoor gear I have laying around (1" poly webbing, stretch cord, three buckles, and plastic hook, most from REI). Took me several tries to get it right; BG beware!

It's been a good year! [toast]

A turntable (my old one has been broken for a decade).

That has meant finally listening to the large LP collection in the basement again.

All of these have been presents over the last two days as a result:

Eugen Jochum's recording of Bach's Christmas oratorio
Berlin/Von Karajan's 60s Brahms cycle
Berlin/Bohm's Die Zauberflote
Boston/Munch Daphnis

......all these and more, which I stubbornly didn't buy on CD or download because I was "waiting to get a new turntable".

Santa came early this year after my Buffet E11 developed a terrible crack in the upper joint. Back in October I think it was, he brought:

-Buffet R13 from 1999

-A Muncy Barrel (which I kept but don't use)

-Clark Fobes Nova mpc

All the above was my Birthday and Christmas gifts from Santa (Funded by Your's Truly)

Since October he has brought lots of boxes of reeds to try for my Nova mpc.

Even tho I got the R13 back in Oct. it was wrapped up and put under the tree a day before Christmas to remind me that it is my Christmas gift.

I also got a K&M clarinet stand

The R13 will be going to the shop this week and I will be set to go with great gear in 2012. I couldn't be happier. Thanks Santa (Me)!

Santa said he'd be a little late with my ReedGeek. Hopefully it comes some time this week.

Although I got it earlier in the fall, my newish 2002 R-13 was considered my Christmas present. I also got money to apply toward clarinet accessories. Oh, and I got a partial knee replacement!

For me: A new BG "floating rail" ligature. I had never seen one before (and still can't find one online), but bought it on a whim at the Midwest Clinic. Jury still out....it's a nice ligature, but not sure I'll be switching from my Vandoren Klassik quite yet.

For my son (who's been playing all of 3 months): a new LeBlanc Bliss clarinet. Got a GREAT deal from Kessler's on a composite clarinet with the wooden barrel. He loves it!

Marty, is it the BG Duo ligature? It looks like it has "floating rails" in a way.

A promise from my wife to not gripe when I persist in banging my head (lips, fingers, tongue, palate, etc.) against the G5 to G6 glissando toward the end of the Shaw Concerto.

I got a Marcus Bonna case this winter.

The courage to leave Buffet and start the transition over to Yamaha CSGIIH-L and CSGIIAH-L clarinets.

My wife had my mid-fifties Conn "Naked Lady" Tenor Sax refurbished. What a wonderful surprise and I'm now trying to relearn sax embouchure and fingering, etc.
Any suggestions for an appropriate mouthpiece? I'm using a woodwind C7 on my Selmer CT clarinet.

Thanks!

This is the only year I haven't really had anything much to open on Christmas day. I got a Tim Vine DVD (comedy) from my brother in law - and my son bought me a Sega Dreamcast (so retro lol), but I think it's maybe because he wants to play the games more than me lol.

I did get money from everyone else - so going to invest in a second clarinet because I dropped my Sonata a couple of weeks ago and smashed it just under the lower keys. Luckily it's my birthday in just over 4 weeks and I have a Yamaha YCL450 already waiting for me - but the second clarinet will be useful if my ensemble play outside anytime.

Santa brought me a terrific vintage Kohlert full boehm Bb clarinet from David Spiegelthal. Looks beautiful, sounds beautiful, and it's just what I wanted!

Thanks Santa! Thanks David!

Well, hte older clarinetist in the house didn't get squat as far as clarinet gear goes, but I hadn't asked for any.

My daughte, on the other hand, got some cash so shecan select a new barrel or two for her Bb or A clarinets, as well as her grandfather's used car, which will allow her to travel to her new teaching job once a week. She also got herself a Richard Hawkins mouthpiece recently for her clarinets, and bought a used B40 from her teacher for use with the eefer.

New bass clarinet mouthpiece (Fobes Debut) and swab.

New eefer barrel from myself (Robert Scott 43mm - and I STILL play quite sharp in the lower register on my Bundy; mouthpiece search is next (current is Vandoren B40).

Set of tuning rings (backordered, so hopefully arriving soon).

Not clarinet-related, but I got an acoustic guitar also (I had one years ago that a friend of my sister's stole). I forgot how much steel strings hurt my fingers; I may get a nylon set as those don't hurt as much, the steel hurt even when I played semi-frequently.

For those that mentioned Marcus Bonna cases, I've gone back and forth on whether I want one; lately I want one. Where can you get a double case?

Mark -

I got a litre of Bailey's Irish Cream. Mix in some of your Maker's Mark, fill a glass about 1/3 and fill up with eggnog, with a bit of freshly grated nutmeg and cinnamon on top.

By the way, have you found a good way to get through the wax on the bottle?

Maintenance on the eefer, beefer, and bass clarinets. Leaks, missing felts, and torqued rods all sorted out. Life is good!
