Hey...I've been using Mitchel Laurie #3s....Would like to give Vandoren V-12s a try but understand their strength rating is different. Are they softer or harder? If I'm used to #3s...what does that translate to in V-12s? Or is there a difference. And what about Rico grand Concert? Thanks...

I don't have an answer for you, but I really like your name. Clarinerd. That's funny. I might have to use that one at home.

I usually tell my students to go a half strength down when switching from Mitchell Lurie to Vandoren V12.

To give you an idea:
Mitchell Lurie #3, according to the brand company are similar to Vandoren Traditional #2 1/2, and just 1/4 softer that a V12 #3.
Check on this link: http://www.ricoreeds.com/charts3.html
On the other hand, Vandoren suggests that V12 #3 are the same as a Vandoren Traditional #2 1/2.
In any event, you will always find some reeds with a 1/4 strenght difference in the same pack of reeds.

Grand Concert Reeds are good too. I use Grand Concert Select Traditional Blank. A 3 Grand Concert would be like a 3 1/4 Mitchel Laurie(if they make them). You also could get a 2.5 Grand Concert Thick Blank which should equal your Mitchel Laurie. The think blank version is also more durable. The is also the Grand Concert Select Evolution. I haven't tried them but you may want to try them too. For information on the Grand Concert Selects go to http://www.ricoreeds.com/grandcrt.html
