I just saw one of this weekend's broadcasts of the West Point Band under the direction of Lt. Col Jim Keene (http://strausnews.com/articles/2011/12/23/new_york/arts_and_entertainment/5.txt). The band sounds phenomenal !!! Special kudos to the saxophone quartet for an exceptional presentation as well.
You know this serves to illustrate the quality of military music and underscores not only the tradition that it is but the importance of this as a career for many of this country's finest young musicians. Lest we forget that West Point (and other military bands) has served as 'training grounds' for some of our most notable colleagues such as the likes of Larry Combs.

I used to drive down with my dad over Storm King mountain to listen to the band at Ike Hall, on cold winter nights like these. Great memories! Great band!

Steve Girko was also a member; then to Dallas Sym. His technique and timbre are great. My Lehigh University friend and mentor, Prof William Schempf, later became the director of music and the band there.

Did anyone else out there submit an application for the recent vacancy in the WP Band? The postmark deadline was Nov. 28. and I was thinking I'd hear something by now about finals, but maybe after the holidays....

Finalists for the WP audition for E-flat/Utility clarinet were already notified by phone. I believe that all others will receive notification via snail mail.
