 How old is my Noblet?
Author: Lee2

I have recently acquired an older wooden Noblet Bb clarinet. I am trying to determine its approximate age, what model it is, and perhaps some opinions on these older Noblets.

The logo on this instrument is oval and marked "NOBLET PARIS" in block letters inside the oval. Just above the logo is a small lyre. Just below the logo are the letters "D" and "N", where the N is stamped directly over the "D". The serial number is 5793. The clarinet uses a standard 6 ring, 17 key Boehm mechanism.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Lee,

I have overhauled these instruments before and believe them to be made in the 30's by the design. I would like to know how close my guess is if you find out.

John

J B - I also have seen some Nobs of that vintage [with the N ] , believe 30-40's is OK. I have a Stubbins Model "Made in France By Noblet" ser. 32xxx, the Stubbins-Kaspar patent US 2,508,550 [its Fig, 2 is very similar] was filed in 1948, issued in 1950. My Nob Eb sop. ser. 31xxx, I've always dated about 1970's, so who knows how they did it !! I wonder if the Normandys are in the Nob sequence as my plastic PLATEAU model is 34xxx. I'm interested also. Don

Interesting info, Don. My Noblet 40 s/n 62xxx (really nice sounding) was given the date of 1967 by Leblanc customer service when I asked a couple of years ago, they're nice folks. My Stubbins s/n 16xxx doesn't sound quite as nice as the 40(but it does have a fairly clear Bb! ;> )
