i know they are not by any means quality instruments, but just to learn on and play for a few months-two years, i want to get one of the 100$ ones on ebay. any comments? here are possible brands- anaxa, e.f. durand, hallelu, conductor. each has a warranty. yes- i know i should get a name brand-ive read all the pros and cons about name brand vs not, but i cant spend that much on a learning clarinet.

thank you

What about to get a used vito or a used bundy clarinet? These will be way better than those $100 crappy so called clarinets!

don't do it - i've seen some of those $100 clarinets break within a few seconds of being put into service.

When my son started up we had the usual rent to own deal from the local music shop. By the end of the deal we would have paid over $800 for plastic Vito student model. After 2 months when it was clear he was going to stick with it, I bought a Buffet B12 (2 years old) on eBay for $115 shipped. I've been happy with it and so has he. As far as I can tell its a quality student clarinet.

If you pay attention to eBay for awhile there are always used student clarinets that I think are probably just fine being sold by parents of kids who started and stopped 3, 6, or 12 months into it. So I wouldn't summarily dismiss them. I'm not an expert but I played all through school and college, and have started up again to play with my son.

Good luck!

Get a good used clarinet from a reputable maker:

Buffet: sold under the Buffet and Evette brands
Leblanc: sold under the Leblanc, Noblet, Normandy, Vito, Holton, and Reynolds brands
Selmer: sold under the Selmer, Signet, Bundy, and Buescher brands
Yamaha

Holton, Reynolds, and Buescher clarinets haven't been advertised widely for decades and are thus overlooked by many, keeping demand and prices for them very low. Do some searching on eBay or your local craigslist and you'll almost always find these brands of clarinets being sold for much less than $100.

Go for a used Selmer, Bundy, Vito, Artley, Yamaha. I've heard that the other "no name" brands actually wind up being riddled with problems that can quickly make them unplayable. I've also heard from one of my repair guys that they are extremely difficult to repair when something does go awry. It may be more cost effective to swing for the ones everyone has been suggesting.

For under $100 you should be able to find a used clarinet in playable condition on EBay or Craigslist. Look for Vito, Bundy, Yamaha. Buescher, Leblanc or Buffet/Evette and you won't go far wrong.
