Morales has not left yet, as I understand it.

Morales is still the principle... he doesn't leave till the end of this 2011-2012 season. Is that what you're asking?
I'm personally very curious to see who takes his place when he leaves for the NY phila. Any of you have any ideas? Or will we just have to wait..

Ricardo has definitely played in the NY Philharmonic this season. I've seen him on televised concerts a couple of times. The rest of the time it's been Mark Nuccio.
It would be tough to make Sam Caviezel the principal in Philadelphia, since he got demoted (or at least passed over) a few years ago.

It is my understanding (not verified, so don't hold me to it) that Ricardo Morales will play a few concerts with New York this year, but he is still the principal in Philadelphia.
Again, it is my understanding (not verified) that he is not eligible for an official leave of absence from Philly till NEXT season. At that time, he can decamp full-time for New York, try it out for a year, and yet still return to Philadelphia the following year, if he desires.
I believe this has been done before with other orchestras.

My understanding is the same as the others' - Morales will play a few concerts in NY and Caveziel will continue to cover what Morales doesn't for now.
That said, I did hear Morales's Saturday night performance recently of the Copland Concerto. The Barber Toccata festiva opened the program and I'm pretty sure (our seats are not close to the stage so it's sometimes hard to see faces) that Paul Demurs played the mostly unexposed 1st part. Morales played for the Dvorak 9 on the second half. I guess it wasn't worth making Sam come in just for the the Barber.

Everyone is right! Don't forget, Sam played principal for several years before Ricardo was hired. I doubt they will hire someone to be acting principal other than Sam until and if Ricardo decides to accept the NY job permanently. Don't read anything into that statement, we just can't assume anything at this point. Ricardo becomes the NY principal full time next season and then we'll see what he does in the future. Philly will more likely hire a temporary assistant - Eb player or just go with their regular subs as they did prior to hiring Ricardo. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

They still had Don Montanaro before Ricardo was hired. I think Montanaro was named "acting" principal after Sam was refused the permanent appointment and named associate principal (Don's former position). I don't remember anyone else coming in to play principal between Don and Ricardo.
The interesting moves won't be made until next season. Ed's reminder is important - Ricardo will still have an option in NY. Philadelphia might name Sam "acting principal" and just not hire a 4th player (to save money), as Ed suggests, until everything settles, but it will be interesting to see who plays E-flat when needed. They did bring in principals from other orchestras (I heard Todd Levy one night) to play principal here on a per series basis (while Ricardo and Sam were both on leave last season). Maybe they'd do that when E-flat is required by the program and have Sam play E-flat.
Keep in mind they're just coming out of a Chapter 11 procedure and have already cut at least one position (4th trumpet) apparently permanently.

In answer to why you see Ricardo playing with NY from time to time. He does that whenever he can be rotated off in Philly so he probably will do that from time to time again this year. Yes, Karl is correct of course, I forgot that Montanaro was still there before Ricardo came in. Who knows, maybe he'll come in from time to time to play Eb. In any case, I think they will have to find someone to give Sam a break to rotate him off of some pieces and even a few concerts. It's a tough schedule for a principal to play every piece on every concert these days. I know, some orchestras only have three players and they do that all the time but I suspect that won't be the case in Philly for an entire season or more. Of course they play a good deal of large repertoire as well so will often need that 4th player. It's a good chance for Sam to show his stuff again. It will be interesting to see what they decide to do if Ricardo decides to stay in NY after next season. Look how long it took NY and Chicago to replace their principals even though they had good players as "acting" principals. Sometimes no one is good enough these days, except for Ricardo of course. And now the Met has a principal opening too. ESP

clarinete09 -
Anthony McGill is (was) co-principal with Stephen Williamson, who won the principal job in Chicago.
During Stanley Drucker's final 10 years or so, he played only the second half of each concert. I don't think this was due to age (he was playing better than ever), but to the stress that Ed P. reminds us of. Most of the NY Phil. wind principals do the same. Stanley seemed immune to stress. He's said the NY Phil. job was very easy for him.

The Met has always had two principals that are both called principles instead of co-principals.. Confusing I now but that's the way they do it. ESP
