Hi,

Whats a good replacement barrel (modern) for a Selmer Centered Tone that will keep its open, vintage sound/properties & feel?

You will have a hard time finding off-the-shelf barrels that will work well with large cylindrical bore instruments like the Selmer CT or Leblanc Dynamic. I suspect that a custom barrel maker like Allan Segal would be happy to make one for you however.

I respectfully suggest contacting a barrel maker for suggestions.

I had an excellent experience working with Backun Musical Services when I needed a barrel for one of my vintage instruments.

Additionally, Dr. Allen Segal is a sponsor of this forum and makes custom barrels--he has posted several insights regarding barrels on the BBoard and would certainly be worth contacting.

Another option is the Ridenour Ivorolon barrel. I have a 66mm Ivorolon with the R bore contour and it plays nicely on my vintage big-bore instruments. It's made of hard rubber, not wood.

If you need a barrel in a hurry due to your old one cracking or worse, this can be obtained quickly through online retailers such as WWBW.

I use a Segal barrel as well as a Backun on my Selmer Signature. I'm not familiar with the CT model so I don't know if it's the same. The problem with any barrel though is that not all barrels play the same. As a matter of fact they all play different. Of course the size and bore's have to be made for the Selmer. My Buffet's are 67 mm, my Selmer is 62.5 mm. I tried about a dozen Backuns before choosing mine and about 4-5 Segals before I found one that I not only liked but fit my Selmer well too. @Ed,

The Selmer CT's are quite different from the Signature and any other current production Selmer clarinets. The Signature has a bore diameter of ~14.6mm while the Centered Tone's nominally have a bore diameter of ~15mm although many (including mine) have an upper joint bore of closer to ~15.2mm similar to the Series 9.

Thanks for the kudos, folks.

CT and Radio Improved models have a SIGNIFICANTLY wider bore than modern Selmers. Maybe a Boosey Hawkes might work if you can find one. Otherwise, a current model could be bored out if you do not want a custom one.

Thanks Dr. Segal et. al.

I looked at your website, would the Type 2 barrel be a good match, or would you have to do a custom bore? I play on a vintage Brilhart Ebolin 3*, on this clarinet. (jazz-big band sound)

I realize this is a very old thread, but noticed recently that Howarth of London has started making these with original bore/taper and nicely finished

It is not clear to me that either Selmer or Howarth are claiming that these new barrels are a good match for the old Centered Tone clarinets. I would ask before buying.

Uh-oh! I bet loads of people on here will be pissed off reviving an old thread, but who cares? I certainly don't. Oh well, let them stew.

Anyway, reading the description makes me assume they're only called 'Centered Tone' as they centre the tone rather than being designed for Centered Tone clarinets as CTs have much larger bores than any narrow bore Selmer since the 10G, Series 10 and all the models that followed on from there.

This is what it says on Howarth's site:

"Since 2014, Selmer spent time developing and testing two new barrel barrels with new bore designs. These were created in collaboration with clarinettists from across the world.

The smaller bore of the Centered Tone, smaller than that of the Présence and Privilège barrels, enables a very focused and compact sound."

There's nothing on Selmer's site from what I can find:

I have a Selmer 10G with a +/- 66mm barrel. The horn plays sharp in the left hand (upper joint) and progressively flatter as one descends in the right hand. Such a disparity! On the Fobes site are listed barrels for older Selmers that are claimed to lower the upper clarion??? Any advise re barrels would be appreciated.
