Funny scene in the PBS American Masters bio on Woody Allen.
They show him sitting down at his writing desk and being confronted with a pile of clarinet reeds. Me mentions that such piles are all over his house.
My piles, in contrast, are carefully ordered (left to right by playability) --all three of them. I hate it when they get disturbed, so I'm trying to get rid of that third pile --by moving them to pile 2.
I don't think I've ever been in a prof's office where there were fewer than $600 worth of cast-off (but still useable) reeds.

"I don't think I've ever been in a prof's office where there were fewer than $600 worth of cast-off (but still useable) reeds."
One more reason why I like the Forestone reed. You don't have to search through three boxes to find a good one--they are ALL good. And they last indefinately, need no conditioning and are always ready to play.

I'm really happy that William likes Forestone reeds, but if he finds one more excuse to write about them, I think I'm going to puke.
By the way, I can't play on them at all.

Has anybody actually ever heard anybody make a really nice sound using Forestone reeds? I've listened to the samples on their website, but I've yet to hear it...

Liquorice- your post made me laugh! I had the same experience with the Forestones.
Regarding Woody's reeds, it reminds me of a story that I heard from Keith Wilson, who taught at Yale for many years. Benny Goodman called him for help with reeds the day before a big recording session. When he arrived, he found Benny in his studio and the top of his grand piano covered a pile of reeds. Benny was trying to go through them to find the right one.

Seriously William are you on the payroll or something?
Forestones are closer to what is useable, but still not close. Guess I'll miss out on the endorsement deal........
Unusable reeds are a necessary casualty of the job. I don't have time to deal with most of the junk in a box; and if I have to spend more than 20 minutes adjusting a reed over a 3 day period it is never gonna get there- so it goes into my "shoe-box of shame."
Par for the course- we're paid to not blame our tools like some bad carpenter.
Yet maybe someday I'll have enough "discards" to build a proper box to hold the future "discards" that are sure to come.
