As a student applying to grad schools and festivals, it has become apparent that more places require a DVD. What hardware does everyone use to record? Most video recorders don't have good enough sound quality, and those with external mic jacks (from what I've found), are pricey.

I used a cheep Kodak video recorder with a Zoom audio recorder plunged into the video recorder. Not the absolute best audio quality- but reasonable.

There are many good and inexpensive HD video cameras which have decent microphones built in. Whatever you use, with or without an external mic, make sure you do a test run of your loudest passages where you will record to make sure it's not overloading the mic. There should be an option to turn the gain up or down manually and if it doesn't have this, find a different recorder. Distortion of the sound is a big problem with Connor's recording... I would also suggest zooming in more than he did so whoever is watching can see you better. As long as you don't send a bad quality recording, it's all about how you play.
I've used a cannon vixia HF R10 for over a year and been happy with it. I think it's around $250. If you use a mac, you can import easily into iMovie then burn with iDVD. If you don't want to buy a camera, perhaps you can borrow one from a friend or your school. If you have a friend studying conducting, they probably own one.
