what's the difference between

I am looking for a new mouthpiece and am currently useing a Vandoren B45 lyre. I want a more closed mp and am considering the vannie 5RV or 5RV lyre. Can any one explain the difference between them. I just need a little background B4 I take a trip to the store and yes I intend to try others as well. I noticed that many people on the b board use them so they must have some good qualities. I use International music suppliers in the chicago area and they seem to have quite a assortment to choose from, any suggestion on where to start?

I have both. The 5RV is quite closed, while the 5RV Lyre is inbetween the 5RV and a standard B45. I would suggest trying the 5RV Lyre, as the 5RV may be too big of a change from what you are used to.

FWIW.....I use an M14 with Vandoren V12 strength 3.5 reeds to achieve a sound satisfactory to my teacher and myself.

I am presently also using an M14, but I moved there in steps (B45, 5RVL, 5RV, M14). I have since given the B45 and the 5RVL to my Niece and she is very pleased with them

I have found that it is very important to match the mouthpiece and the reed strength. I would recommend a minimum of a 3-1/2 for the 5RV, while you can get away with a 3 on the B45 or 5RVL.

Of course, the only way to know for sure what's best for you is to try some out. Be sure to try out more than one of each style as there are individual differences.

Don't hesitate to try other brands as well - Vandoren seems to offer a good quality rubber mouthpiece at an attractive price, but there are lots of other excellent brands out there if you are willing to pay a little more. Bay, Borbeck, Morgan, Combs, Fobes, Gigliotti, Portnoy, Roger Garret, Pyne, Hite, Pomarico Crystal, and the list goes on...

If you are after a close lay mouthpiece there are other choices other than vandoren. Try selmer A* or B * close but short or A & B standard which are longer with similar tip sizes. I dont know what style you play in but Meyer 2,3 or 4 might be good to try. Lots of volume and suit a hard reed.
