I am also looking at the Vandoren M13 lyre mouthpiece for my 1969 R13.
Can anyone tell me what they think of this mouthpiece and also recommend a good quality ligature?

i tried the M13 lyre profile 88 and it was horrible for me, and it messed up my embochure/air pressure to a point where i had to spend 3 weeks fixing it. the problem i had was not only was the mouthpiece rediculously flat in the throat tones(which is most likely because of the 88 profile which plays flatter than normal mouthpieces) but also the dynamic range i could get out of the mouthpiece was about pppp-mp. I tried a profile 88 5rv lyre later which was alot better but still had the same problems just to a lesser degree. Im convinced it was just because of the profile 88 series however which i cannot for the life of me understand the purpose of making. anyway I started on the B45 and ended up back on it. intonation is spot on or 4-5 cents sharp when im warmed up, dynamic range is very big, i can bend notes easily, and the tone is great.

For ligatures it depends what your looking for. I own the Bonade inverted, the Rovner dark, and the Vandoren Optimum. in my opinion the most expensive and widely advertised Optimum was the worste one. Bonade gave a really good, clear sound and made articulation easy. the rovner dark however was the one i stuck with, it gives me the darkest sound of all three and alittle resistance that i like. I'm interested about how the Rovner Versa would sound, its basically the same thing as the dark but has different plates that change your sound like the Optimum.

The profile 88 probably has a much less effect on your pitch issues than the fact that the M13 Lyre is a 13 series ("American pitch") mouthpiece, which is designed to play lower in pitch.

As always, what may work for you make not work for others and vice-versa.

Yes I'm glad someone else said that.

Be SURE you are dealing with one STANDARD pitch Vandoren vs. a 'Series 13.' These two versions (available for much of their line) ARE pitched differently. And just for the record I prefer the 'standard pitch' for American tuning thank you.

Does anyone know why the Vandoren M13 Mouthpiece was "specially designed" for the Buffet 13?

It's my understanding that the designation is more a marketing moniker. Clearly Buffet has a dominant position in the United States and in Vandoren's quest to put a name to the 'lower pitch' model designed for the States they picked '13.'
