I am looking into Mr. Fox's clarinets for my next purchase. I'm looking mainly for an A clarinet. I have played more than 11 Buffet r-13's and they have ALL been dissappointing. I have only played 1 Opus A that played wonderfully.
I wil be looking at the A clarinets though. My question is, is does anyone here play on, or know someone who plays his horns??? Before I pay/order one I want to get an opinion of how they play, the resistance, intonation and overall sound. I know of noone who has even heard of Steven fox, so I need all the information I can get.
Thanks, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Joaquin Valdepenas of the Toronto Symphony plays on his instruments. And I know Stehpen personally.
I personally have tried his instruments; (at a clarinet clinic in Toronto last October) I didn't like the almost total lack of resistence on both the Bb and the A. I felt as if the intonation is unstable, and the overall sound too bright and even brittle.

Can't help you with Stephen Fox, but the other day I received my Rossi A to match the Rossi Bb I bought over the summer. Both instruments play much more evenly than my R13s, better intonation and a more homogenous tone over the range of the clarinet. Luis is also a joy to deal with. You can try his clarinets thru WW, tho I just went directly thru him, which allowed me to customize more.

I purchased a pair of Fox's Benade instruments and have found them to be superior to my RC Prestige clarinets in almost every respect. If you would like more information, contact me privately.

I bought my Selmer Eb clarinet from a bloke at the university of Toronto, a Masters student in clarinet performance. He had just bought a new Buffet RC Prestige Eb, and I was buying his old horn from him. The Selmer is made of resonite, but the fellow had Steve Fox do some work on it to resolve some tuning problems. As far as Eb clarinets go, the tuning on them is usually horrible, but this instrument I had is amazing how much in tune it is. With the adjustmnets and inserts that Steve Fox added, it plays like an instrument worth considerably more. This Steve Fox guy really knows what he is doing. I just wish I could afford a set of his custom instruments...
