 Brahms F Minor Exposition?
Author: orchestr
Date:   2011-11-21 10:22

My question is simple and hopefully straightforward. Where does the exposition to the first movement of the F Minor Brahms Clarinet Sonata end? m 89? (double-bar before [4])

I tried finding a theoretical analysis of the form online, but to no avail.

James Fay did his dissertation on Brahms's clarinet works, including the sonatas, "The Clarinet and its Use as a Solo Instrument in the Chamber Music of Johannes Brahms."

It doesn't appear to be available online, but you can get in touch with him at http://www.nvcc.edu/home/nvfayxj/. An abstract is available at http://www.nvcc.edu/home/nvfayxj/abstract.htm. The bibliographic information is DDM Code: 61chFayJ; DA no.: 52/04:1123; RILM no.: 91:3649dd; UM no.: 91-25562.

You can order a copy at https://order.proquest.com/OA_HTML/pqdtibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?item=9125562&sitex=10020:22372:US&track=DxWeb&rpath=http%3A//dissexpress.umi.com/dxweb%3F%26query%3DAU%2528fay%2529%2520AND%2520TI%2528brahms%2529%26page%3D1. A PDF download is $37.

Any music reference librarian will be able to find sources for an inter-library loan. Johns Hopkins, for example, has a copy https://catalyst.library.jhu.edu/catalog/bib_283392.
