 Throat Problems
Author: Sam
Date:   2001-02-05 20:55

I have found that when I finish practicing my clarinet, my throat is sore. It hurts a tiny bit when I swallow, and I was curious if there was a cause that anyone knows of that would cause my throat to hurt.

Thanks!
Sam

Do a search on the bulletin board. This topic has come up before and if my memory serves me correctly, this is commonly due to starting the notes by flexing the throat or epiglottis or something like than rather than tonguing the notes. If so, you will need to learn the correct tonguing technique.

Hi Sam,

Have you changed anything in your play schedule?

More resistant reeds or any other part of the rig will put some stress on the extensible parts of your airway.

If you have a mirror handy, check your face for signs of strain. Popping veins or redness are indications that you have raised your "Operating pressure" to the point this could cause problems.

Also, humidity is down in the Winter (you are Northern Hemishperic, right?) and you may be drying out.

Lotsa watta.

Hi Sam,

Yes, tounging with your throat may be the cause or perhaps your neck and shoulder are too tense when you are playing. This tension may cause a pain in your throat.

Correcting some minor technique flaws usually cures uncomfortability on the horn.
Just try to do everything properly when you play (posture, embouchure.......)

When I began playing a few months ago I had the same problem. In my case I was trying to force the air into the clarinet instead of supporting the air column with my diaphragm. This caused my throat to expand causing it to ache and become a little sore.
It takes very little air to cause the reed to vibrate providing the air column is supported well with the diaphragm and the embouchure is correct. Don't force your playing.Try to relax and take it steadily one slow step at a time. Believe me you will get there eventually.
Take some time out to look through past postings on this board ,it is very educational.
Good luck to you and take care.
Yusuf

It's not actually tonguing. It's starting and stopping the air stream by flexing the throat. i.e. opening and closing the throat. From the listener's point of view, it can sound like tonguing though. It's not a good habit to get into.
