Hello folks,
I play an R13, but I've never owned a matched pair of any make. Therefore, I don't know how the serial numbers work with "matched pairs". Question is, can I tell from the serial number and/or the model number whether an R13 is in B flat or A?
The one I'm looking at is a BC 1231AG, from the Buffet website. I assume the AG means silver, and the few B flat numbers I've checked are model 1131, but I'd like to be sure.

I don't know what the AG means, but a BC1231 is an R13 A clarinet according to the catalogue I have.

There's a different model number for the Bbs & A's, for example:

But you have to be able to interpret the results. According to the OP, the Buffet site is where he found his model number in the first place.
Buffet has changed its serial numbering system several times over the years, generally to add more information to the code. BC 1231AG is an earlier system than the one Steve describes, probably the immediately preceding one because it does use 1231 to designate an R13 A clarinet. The AG does indicate silver plated keys.

It's to keep us on our toes, or just to confuse us.
but for the OP, please know that the "matched pairs" may not be sequential serial numbers. I'm not sure how at the factory (or at Buffet USA) they "match" a Bb to an A.
But of the sets that I've seen they can be quite a few hundred numbers off if bought at the same time.

I note that the -2 and -5 for nickle and silver plate keys is not consistent between the greenline and wooden R13s.

Where did you get that information, Bob? The numbers are consistent in Steve's list (and Steve hasn't edited it yet.) It does look like Steve may have put the list together himself, rather than copying it from the Buffet website, e.g. I note that, in the first line of his table, he refers to "nickel silver" keys. That should be "nickel plated." Ditto, further down when he lists the R13 A. Buffet hasn't used unplated "nickel silver" keys in decades.

They probably just put them both in a ring... at least in USA

my model list above was compiled by myself with a few magazines, not the buffet website directly. You think I would of thought of that first ?
