Trial of Backun barrels and bells
Author: Clarinetero

I own two Backun barrels (one ringless and one traditional) which I bought on the internet and I really like them, but for a time now I have been thinking about trying the fatboy and MoBa models. Now I'm decided to order some barrels directly from Backun to try them. Can anyone tell me about your experience working directly with the company and how their trial policy works? How many barrels and/or bells they send etc.

Thanks for your help!!!!!! :) (and excuse my bad English)

Call Olivia at Backun Musical. She'll give you all the details

Briefly: Usually, Backun Musical will send you barrels for trial. You can request a few, or even as many as 12 (or more?) The last few times I picked out MOBA barrels I think I got 12 in each shipment.

Your credit card will be charged for one barrel and postage. The charge for the barrel is refunded if you do not select one.

You pay the return postage.

Exactly what GBK said.

I'll add that the customer service was excellent. I ordered a few barrels for myself on trial, and some of a couple of students to try (to hopefully purchase) when I was teaching. I had them longer than I intended to, but they were fine with it. I ended up purchasing a Fatboy. Olivia wasn't there originally when I sent the first email out, but Jeremy was very helpful as well, until Olivia got back a couple of days after my inquiry. I'll say that shipping is the biggest downside to it, but there's nothing they can really do about that side of it.

Good luck!

Fabulous products and fabulous customer service. Excellent communication from Backun and they are very open to questions and will help you out any way they can.

I purchased a barrel directly from them a year or two ago, and can't wait to do more business with them!!!

Enjoy!

I had a different, though also excellent, experience. I sent in my clarinet to Morrie for some work and requested that he match up a fatboy to the instrument (I already had two traditional barrels that came with the clarinet). Morrie did a great job of matching a perfect cocobolo barrel tomy instrument. It only took one additional day after all the maintenence work was done.

Oh yeah.... one of the original barrels that came with my clarinet had a change in bore dimensions, so Morrie re-reamed that one to original specs for me, too! :)

I just had a very nice experience working with Olivia at Backun. I trialed 4 Moba barrels and 5 different mouthpiece facings.

I ended up keeping one of the barrels which really stood out with a lot of positive results in sound, intonation, and response.

I already had tried the mouthpieces a while ago but wanted to give them a second go and they just are not my cup of tea.

Overall it was a very great experience and all of the products were top quality. Olivia is great to work with and it could not have been easier.

Be very careful to pay for tracking when returning items. Otherwise, it could end up costing you a lot more. A few years ago I got stiffed for the cost of a couple of barrels when I was told that they did not have a record of the return.
