I came back to the clarinet after 50+ years, played every day for 4 years, then discovered the tenor sax. After another 5 years on the sax, I had surgery that prevented me from playing for quite a while. Now the bug has bitten again and I'm just starting on the clarinet again and want to get a nice mouthpiece for myself for an early Christmas.
I have two clariinets that are favorites: A Selmer Series 9 and a Leblanc Concerto that I bought new in 2002. My budget is about $200. The only 'piece that I have now is a beginners "Hite Debut". The characteristics that I'm looking for: easy to play and reed friendly, like the Debut, (I'm comfortable with a #2 1/2 reed). The tone I'm looking for is: full and mellow, not bright and "sparkling" ..... similar to that heard in Pete Fountains recordings. I play stictly for my own entertainment, (mostly Big Band), so I have no "standards" to meet. I'm half way through my 8th decade and just want to play for my own enjoyment. And .... I prefer to buy a ready made 'piece ..... possibly from WWBW??
I know there is no magic answer, but there are a lot of years of experience and lots of "smarts" among BBoard members, and I respect your opinions. What do you good people suggest?
Joe.

Joe,
You are a man after my own heart! What I want for myself is to be much in demand as an oboist in my 8th decade.
What I want for you is to connect with Greg Smith and have him make you the perfect mouthpiece. Don't even think about a stock item. Get the best!
Susan
