Hi all,
I am hoping for some suggestions on woodwind shops in the Baltimore/D.C. area that keep decent-sized stocks of new clarinets for playtesting, particularly non-Buffets. It is not always easy to find professional-line Yamaha or Selmer clarinets, especially if one wishes to playtest multiple instruments of the same model. I contacted Washington Music Center, but they are more of a Buffet-centric store.

The market has become rather segmented with only a few stores that carry the Selmer Paris line.
Baltimore is not THAT far from N.Y. and there should be someone out there who can help you.
You can (if you negotiate pretty well) get any Yamaha dealer to bring in a pro-line horn on a trial basis only. But you'll have but one to try.
I say set up a weekend in the Big Apple.

In lower Maryland I really liked Chuck Levens Washington Music Center when I was at Peabody. Good prices, good discounts on reeds, and lots of horns in stock. Usually around 20 plus Bb Buffet clarinets. They pretty much sell evrything. Guitars, drums, the works.

You could check out L&L Wind Shop up in Gaithersburg, MD. I try to go by there any time I am up there for work. I am not what all they have but when I was in there yesterday I saw several Buffet and some Leblanc on display on the wall.

I live and play in Baltimore. To the best of my knowledge there is no place that has any stock of instruments. Chucks is the only place that has any kind of stock. Sometimes he may have a Selmer or Leblanc or Yamaha. There used to be a place in Delaware that I used to take my students to buy clarinets, I bought my new Selmer there too, but Vince sold out a couple of years ago and the person that took over only carries a few Buffets now. It's too bad that we don't have a large music store in our area. There's a major conservatory, two universities with music departments, and a major symphony orchestra in the immediate area but no major music store. :-( ESP eddiesclarinet.com

I went to philly a lot in the summers and studied repairing with Hans Moennig. This was in the 70's to the early 80's. To my knowledge there were't any stores. I knew my way around the city fairly well, at least the center city area.

For NYC, where would one recommend visiting? I recall reading about a Yamaha showroom in the past (the Atelier?). How about for the other major brands?

Probably Weiners in Queens. If you call them you can find out what they have in stock for you to try and give you directions by train or car. As I recall, it's been a few years though, most of the music stores mostly carry guitars, drums and electronic because that's where the money is. ESP
