Mark C. -
In the first string above, you wrote in 2009: "In the Tokyo area, a clarinetist on the way up as a conductor: Stephen Charette."
Any further news?

Yes, still conducting. Principal conductor of the Edogawa Symphony, assistant conductor of The Orchestra Ensemble Kanagawa, and conducting other orchestras and opera on a regular basis - along with occasional clarinet playing in chamber ensembles. http://www.stephencharette.com

Another remarkable clarinetist on the way up as a conductor that we can add is José Luis Estellés.
He has conducted some spanish orchestras like TAiMAgranada, OJA, JONC, JONDE, Barcelona 216, Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada or some other european orchestras like Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra or the London Sinfonietta.

Please pardon the update, but I couldn't help myself ...
My son Stephen will be conducting the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra in one of their outreach programs on February 14, 15, and 16th.

Not this time - the concerts are open only to residents of the area ( though they possibly might make an exception for me if I asked ). Hopefully things will go further and I can see him in the summer or winter season. We'll see how things develop.

What does the "Famous" in the heading refer to - clarinet or conducting ?
Sir Colin Davis is a very famous conductor. I don't think he would claim to ever have been a famous clarinetist.

The late Maestro Efrain Guigui was a clarinetist in New York and Puerto Rico.

Norman,
Colin Davis was notable for giving the premier performances of the Arnold Sonatina and the Christopher Shaw Sonata to name a few.
