I've replied on earlier posts. As a veteran of the 1950s traditional jazz scene in Britain, I think Acker Bilk is a terrific jazz player. I'm not keen on Stranger on the Shore, but I do not begrudge him his success. There were lots of great jazz clarinetists around in those days. My favorite was Sandy Brown.

I have to admit that for a long time, I was unfamiliar with Acker Bilk. I once had a co worker, a bit older than I, who loved Stranger on the Shore. This prompted me to buy the sheet music, but I never played it "right" (and I'm still not sure I'm playing it right!) until I heard recordings of Acker Bilk many years later.
Sad to say, but Acker Bilk is almost unknown among my acquaintances. I think he once had a following in the U.S., but it's probably accurate to say that he's almost forgotten in the U.S. nowadays. Still, when I listen to his recordings, I find something charming about his playing. He plays with sincerity, and
he seems to love what he's doing.
Beejay, thanks for posting the link. There is something rather quaint or old-fashioned about it--but I love it!

LOL--You bet I read it.
I agree with clarinetguy--Bilk always plays with sincerity. I never really knew of him until recent years, and it was through the New Orleans players who respected (and respect) him that was able to approach his music.
