In eBay auction item #1406482823 (still current), one of the images shows a star above the serial number. I have this on my Series 9 Selmer. Actually, on mine two stars appear above the serial number in the top joint (not on the bottom joint). What does it mean?

The joint has been replaced by Selmer due to a crack or another defect. Selmer would actually stamp a new joint with the same serial number but preface it with a * . I actually worked on a Selmer CT with a * on both the upper and lower joint....go figure! I would think that Selmer would have just given the customer a new clarinet unless they joints cracked at different times during the warranty period. I asked this same question on the BB a couple of years ago when I ran across my first encounter of this. This is not to be confused with the * on the Series 9 logo however. That means an entirely different thing (polycylindrical bore).

.... and I have seen a Selmer CT with a ** (yes, a double star) above the number on a Upper Joint. Go figure -- uh, maybe it cracked TWICE or maybe the tech who was charged with the actual replacement work in Paris, France felt that the horn was just a terrible PITA!!!! mw

Mine has the double star! Not one but two stars above the serial number.

I've got a Series 9 from about 1960 with 2 stars above the serial number on the upper joint. And this joint has a pin from where it cracked (I wonder if I could get them to replace it and give me one with 3 stars...) Did Selmer have problems with frequent cracks in the upper joints?

Yes, actually, according to my technician (Steve Fowler of Pasadena, MD), Selmers DO (or did) crack a lot. Who cares?! The Series 9 I have is a fantastic clarinet.
Another interesting question might be why/how is the Selmer wood so different from Buffet? The wood looks different (shiney, slender-walled), feels different (smooth), and appears to be "treated" or painted differently (oily). Of course, I'm talking about pre-Series 10 Selmers. The Buffet wood is all the same (at least, my 1938 and my 1980 Buffets appear the same).
