Author: EEBaum

Hey everyone... I'm compiling a list of commonly-used mouthpiece and reed brands in the U.S. Want to make sure I'm not leaving any out. Didn't immediately find any lists on Google or in the search. Would appreciate if all's'a'y'alls could see if I have any glaring omissions (or inclusions that are obsolete), or point me to any such lists that exist. Thanks!

Mouthpieces:
Backun
Bay
Behn
Fobes
Gennusa
Grabner
Hawkins
Hite
Lomax
Pomarico

Reeds:

Is the goal of this list to catalog which of the current makes players are using or to determine what equipment players are using in general? There are many vintage mouthpieces that are no longer available (Kaspar, Chedeville, Opperman, etc.) but are sought after and still used by many players. I'm not sure if you want these to be included in the list or not.

The goal is to determine which equipment people are using in general, though perhaps biased toward what's still on the market. Trying to make a list of what someone may encounter playing. If there are two guys out there using it, not so interested, but if it has a following yes.

If you must know, I'm trying to determine compatibility for a line of ligatures that are matched to particular mouthpiece dimensions, want to make sure I have the more common bases covered.

Thanks for filling the gaps, and keep them coming!

For the Chris Hill, I'm only finding a site with Chadash/Hill blanks. Is there a place with finished mouthpieces to peruse?

Ramon Wodkowski's mouthpieces are gaining a following, and rightly so.

Not for nothing, but wwbw has somewhere around 94 different clarinet mouthpieces that they readily stock and ship throughout the US. And that's not including MANY of the custom makers. This could end up being a VERY long list...

A very long list indeed! I checked the WWBW list already, and at least added the ones with names I've heard around here.

Many different models have compatible dimensions (e.g. everything on Zinner blanks) for my purposes, thankfully.

You forgot two of my favorite mouthpieces:

Brilhart
Portnoy

and my least favorite reeds:

Bari

EEBaum...note that some ligatures are too big around to fit properly on the Portnoy, which is not an especially uncommon mouthpiece.

...and Buffet stock mouthpieces ought to be on the list; many are in use.

"I'm trying to determine compatibility for a line of ligatures that are matched to particular mouthpiece dimensions"

This is precisely what John Winslow did with his ligitures. He made all of them specifically for different mpc models--most of which he had in his shoppe. His goal was to design a perfect fit which would most effectively enhance the tone quality by allowing the reed to vibrate most efficiently and create a rich spectrum of overtones. For whatever your motives are, EB, I think you're on the right track.

i guess I can't add anything to these. I use a Morgan, someone already suggested it. I like the McClunes, someone mentioned that too. What it boils done to is that there is no "common" MP used in the U.S.? One only has to look at the mail order stores and copy everyone published because we all use different ones and that's great and it's the way it should be. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

I wanted to add the Eddie Daniels (Leblanc) mouthpiece to the list and noticed NO reference on WWBW that it even exists. Has Leblanc pulled out of the mouthpiece business, or has there been a falling out with Eddie ?????

The Combs mouthpiece is still available from interstatemusic.com

WWBW just isn't what it used to be in terms of keeping woodwind accessories in stock. My last trip to South Bend two weeks ago was a huge disappointment. I did find a delightful Portnoy piece which ended up going home with me.

On the other hand, there have been some availability issues with mouthpieces from Conn-Selmer itself. I've had a Brilhart on back order for months now.

Some less common mouthpieces are Guy Hawkins, Zinner, Couf, Bonade, M C Gregory, Brodus, GG Italy(probably Pomarico) and Mitchell Lurie, from looking in my mouthpiece box.

For mouthpieces I second Lelia. I play on a vintage Sumner that was worked on by Ed Cabarga, and for reeds I use Vandoren V12 4 1/2's. It's definitely the best set-up I've had so far.

eebaum,
Guy Chadash and I used to make blanks together, but I'm making mouthpieces on my own now. I don't have a website yet, but as soon as i get caught up on orders, that is my next project. If you are interested in trying some mouthpieces, please email me at themouthpieceguy@msn.com
Thanks!

The GG Italy is a Pomarico, and was named after my good friend Efrain Guigui who passed away a few years ago.
