 Buffet E-12
Author: Liesel
Date:   2001-02-02 01:25

I am going to major in music in college so I am getting a new clarinet. My band director suggested the Buffet E-12 for $1700. Can anyone give me any info on the E-12?

Liesel,
If you are willing to put out $1,700 for the E-12, why don't you consider the R-13? There are several advertisers on the net that have new R-13s for a little more than $1,700.

Liesel, I agree totally with Gary. Given your choice of music as a field of study, $1700 on an E-12 would be a big mistake. If you want a new horn, you can get a feel for what an R-13 can be had for new by looking on ebay. Several dealers (none of whom I have dealt with) auction R-13's starting as low as $1599. That is not a recommendation to buy . . . that's for information. You should also get familiar with Woodwind and Brasswind. They have a great catalog and a great website, though I've never done business with them either. But that too is part of your education process.

I am beginning to prefer the idea of buying a used pro horn for far less and letting someone like the Brannen's overhaul and tweek it.

Check this site under resources/ retail and pay particular attention to Woodwind and Brasswind, Weiner, and Muncy Winds. They all discount R13s, but usually will not list prices on the net or in their catalogs. It will take phone calls (800 #s) to get prices. They will sell horns "on approval" with return privilages with certain restrictions. An R13 with shipping to NJ from one of these 3 was just under $1750 last August. In this price range, you can get a pro level instrument, don't settle for an intermediate (especially if you will major in clarinet, your professor(s) will expect a pro instrument.)

Best of luck to you!

Weiner frequently lists a Buffet Festival (R-13 w/ Silver Plated keys and aux Eb/G# key) for $1700. Check their website.

Pardon me, I meant Youffer's. They don't seem to have that deal posted on their website right now, but it is sure worth a phone call to ask - they may give it to you.

The festival isn't exactly an R13. There's other changes made to register and tone hole placement which does affect the sound.

You might want to check out the auction at YAHOO where " a MINT,MINT,MINT" R-13 is offered for a bid price of 1599 and with a years free extended service policy. Is this a good deal? I don't know, depends what you could get it for on the closing hammer.

Liesel,
The reason that I haven't responded is that everyone here has posted good sources. However, it is extremely important for you to try the horns before you purchase it. No two horns sound alike. The R-13 is a world class horn, but they do have some clinkers. My son tested a bunch of horns before he selected the one he liked. Whoever you go with be sure that you can test the horns and not feel pressure to buy any particular horn if you don't like them. You are doing the store a favor by considering buying from them...not vice versa! If they don't want to cooperate go to another store. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions, I brought these things up to my band director. He showed me a catalog where I can order a new R-13 for about $1900, and have 7 days to test it to make sure I want it. Thanks for helping me!

Ack! $1900!? That's just a little over the top for me. A new Buffet R-13 'A' selected out of the mountain of Buffet's at Robert D. Gilbert's music store out here in Los Angeles is that much new, and the Bb's are much cheaper!

I'd definitely look around at stores all over the U.S. that are carried by the catalogs or have sites that you can find by cnd checking out their Ebay auctions. Get some instruments in the $1500-$1700 range on approval and make your decision from there (and these are new instruments). Check out WWandBW, Kessler Winds, Matthew's Music, etc...

Yea check out on an R-13 I think at Woodwind and Brasswind (http://www.wwandbw.com) they quoted me around $1700 - $1800 for a brand new R-13. I got my R-13 Vintage for $2213.95 with shipping and insurance and all that.
