 basset horn

Dear friends,
Some time ago, I asked what you would choose if a fairy godmother said you could have the instrument of your dreams. For reasons I won't go into, I'm now in that happy situation. You sent me all sorts of great suggestions, and I promised eventually to tell you what I intended to do after I arrived at a decision. Well, I've decided to get a basset horn. I don't know how to play one, and I dont't know what I'm going to do with it, but I do know that everytime I hear one it makes shivers go up and down my spine, and I reckon that if it was good enough for Mozart, it's good enough for me. Am I crazy or what?

Sounds great to me. If it brings you joy, what other reason do you need? Enjoy your new horn!

If I had a fairy godmother to grant me one wish I would get a basset clarinet in Bb with articulated G#/C#, forked Bb/Eb, and left hand Eb/Ab key. It would be a large bore horn like the Leblanc Pete Fountain model, have silver plated keys, and be equipped with a loop for a neckstrap. It would also come equipped with an extra barrel with a slight curve to it that would make using a strap more comfortable. And lastly, it would come equipped with an extra bell that opened towards the front (like the bell on a saxello style soprano sax) to make it easier to play into a microphone, But I think I have about as good a chance of having a fairy godmother grant me this wish as having one of the major manufacturers actually produce and offer for sale a horn such as this. But it's nice to dream.

beejay,

Robert Small posted a question "Basset horns" on 29-Jan-2001. There were plenty of replies. Read all of these very carefully. There are apparently a few different types of basset horn. You may not get that spine-tingling sound you are looking for unless you choose carefully.

Hello beejay,

there is a 'basset horn meeting' in Germany this year (May 24th to 27th) at <a href=http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_find?link=btwn/twn-map_results&zoom_level=6&uid=u94302ibv5s7tedd:801z2lu6t&SNVData=3mad3-0.fy%2842xu67_5ubxl.hqu%3b%28U4dhmw5mmk1%24%2bWbce4msjw%3dNmeju3ndl%3a%2bQS_%3d%3a%28EJ%3a8nl672%3dr2xla%28l%241w-u.wf7%3bxcx5sf7.grfe%7cs%24jdvnd%7cU4dhmw5mmk1%24%2bWbce4msjw%3dNmeju3ndl%3a%2bQS&pcat=>Grevenstein, NRW</a> (although a part of the city of Meschede [postal], approx. 20 km away from it's centre).
<b>If you're crazy enough, join it.</b>
Ask me for more information.
(I heard, Hans de Nijs, another 'poster' within this BB, intends to join, too.)

And a note to Robert Small:
I would insist to have a socket to mount a floor support at a basset clarinet.

Your's

Arnold (the basset hornist)

To Arnold the Basset Hornist.
Well it was your repertoire list that helped tip my decision. I'd very definitely be interested in coming to that meeting. So yes, I'd like more information. Many thanks.

Mmmmmm, F Basset Horn...now you're talking! A coworker and I just recorded the Mendelssohn Concertpiece #2 with Bb and Basset and those lower extensions down to pedal C made all the difference in adding proper depth and providing integrity to the piece.

Hi!

About 3 months ago, I acquired a used Selmer Series 9 basset horn made in 1964 and have since overhauled it and buffed the keys so that it is like new. Actually, the keys are quite slippery now and, since they are a little bit smaller than my R13, one has to practice it a little to get used to it. It seems quite well in tune with the mouthpiece that came with it, an old Conn mouthpiece, but I haven't had time to try other mouthpieces or to practice on it. I intend to go to the UCLA and USC libraries to see what music they have for it.

As a result, I would be interested in your information, Arnold, on the meeting in Germany although I don't think I could make it this year. Thank you for offering to share that information.

Good Wishes,

Wes Brown
