I am auditioning for university (BMus/BEd) on clarinet. Is it necessary/expected to bring a portfolio to an audition? If so, what would you put in one if you have not done exams before?
Never Bb, sometimes B#, and always B natural! ♫♪

You will be given the music. The important thing is to know the standard solos cold, and preferably have them memorized.
Audition rules:
1. Do *exactly* what the the instructions say. If you're told to start at measure 28, but the solo doesn't start until measure 30, you lose points if you don't play the meaningless notes in measure 28.
2. Count like crazy, and even harder during rests. Lots of points are lost when you jump an entrance after a rest. More points are lost for inaccurate rhythm than anything else.
3. Slow and accurate is *much* better than fast and sloppy. If they want you to play something faster, they'll ask, and you'll have the advantage of having just played through the passage.
4. For a conservatory audition, you must have ALL your scales and arpeggios down cold. Even the difficult ones. Believe me, your competitors will. Be able to play any scale if asked, up and down, major, melodic and harmonic minor and in thirds, plus chromatic and diminished sevenths.
There have been lists of audition material, often with attached scans, published from time to time here and in Clarinet Magazine.
Ed Palanker published a list of bass audition excerpts in Clarinet several years back. Perhaps he could post it here. He also has valuable advice on auditions and tricky passages on his site at http://eddiesclarinet.com/

I'm assuming you're auditioning for either the QLD conservatorium or university of QLD - neither would require a portfolio as such, just a required piece (which they would send you) and own choice pieces.
The QLD con typically uses 2 rose etudes for its required pieces, not sure about UQ though. Definitely brush up on all technical work and have your own choice pieces well prepared. Also probably be a short interview about why you want to study there and what you want to do afterwards, have good answers prepared for these questions.
Feel free to email me if you have other questions
Edit - just realised I had my email address hidden oops, it should be fixed now

If the material provided contains a typo (a missing accidental, a misplaced dynamic change, a wrong ornament, etc.) should you still play exactly what's printed, even though you know it's wrong?

For college know all of your scales, probably 5 sharps and 5 flats. Practice sight reading everyday, at least an hour. They almost always want you to sight read. The last thing is a solo piece of your choice. At one college the clarinet teacher asked me to play low E , start soft, go to ff and back down to P. Nice and even. Special attention to your sound and evenness. Never expected that for an audition! I did OK with it, but far from nailing it.
