Doesn anybody know when Johnann Stamitz premiered his clarinet concerto? Wasn't it in the 1750's not long after Molter premiered his?

Peter Cigleris or Tony Pay would probably know more accurate details, but as I understand it the JOHANN Stamitz (the father of Karl) Clarinet concerto is "thought" to have been composed/performed around 1765, but that there is no scholarship that currently pinpoints a date etc. I also believe that it is not 100% certain that it was Johann Stamitz who composed this work.

Kia ora, Donald,
I checked several sources and they all agree that Johann died in 1757. So, unless someone else did indeed compose (and/or premier) his clarinet concerto, a 1765 premier would be unlikely (or, at least, would have been quite a memorable event).
Best regards,
jnk

ooops, i meant 1756- but I'm fairly sure I remember reading that it is only an educated guess (well, educated deduction sounds nicer) that this was written by Johann Stamitz. I've performed this work with orchestra several times and think it's a great work btw. Next time I'm at Uni to teach my sax student I'll check in the library- i think I remember where I read about this (the www seems to have little information about it).

Yeah, this Father/Son Johann/Karl and their several concerti, some in the same key really confuses the issue. I'd like to sort them out so I can put a note in my sheet music.

Johann actually had 2 sons... only one concerto is thought to be by Johann but I think the score only has "Stamitz" on it and it is considered to be by Johann due to the compositional style matching his rather than that of his sons... as i said- need to check at the library and won't be there until Monday

The autograph score/parts are marked "del Sig Stamitz" without specifying the first name, but quite convincing analysis of the compositional style etc strongly suggests Johann Stamitz- thus this concerto has traditionally been attributed to him since its first publication. I can find no information on the date of premiere and believe no record survives of this.
