 Silver Care
Author: Don Poulsen

My new instrument has all the metal parts silver plated. I realize that one step in preventing or delaying tarnish is to place an anti-tarnish strip or a sachet of activated carbon in my case. But what about cleaning the instrument after use? I picked up a silver-instrument polishing cloth from my local music store. Is it good to wipe off the keys, etc. with that after practice or should I use a plain cotton cloth? In other words, will the polishing cloth remove some silver with each use?

My buffet has silver keys too. I use a silver polishing cloth on mine. Its yellow made by selmer. I love it, and it works well. There doesnt seem to be a problem with the loss of plating at all/

If its a polishing cloth, chances are very good that it's a polishing rouge, and quite abrasive.

Here is what I do to prevent tarnish and keep the silver on the keys for as long as possible. I wipe down the keys with a simple cotton cloth after I play my horn and I use a tarnish prevention strip in the case where the horn is stored all of the time.

This technique is as simple as it is effective. That's all I do for silver care for my horn. All I can say is that it works for me.
