I'm thinking this year of making a sampler pack of 6 of the best of the best Mouthpieces, so that my students can try a wide variety of them, and pick what works for them as individuals.
Which 6 different brands/facings would be on your wish list?
I'm thinking Smith, Grabner, Behn, Lomax, Fobes, and Hawkins.
I've already got Vandoren M13, several Backun, Gennusa, Smith, Hite D + J, Pomarico, and a few others that I can't remember at this early hour.....

Cool question.
Personally, from what I've tried, I'd put together M15, Smith, Hawkins (B or R), Fobes (I don't like it, but someone else may), Grabner, and Gennusa.

Among the mass-produced mouthpieces that students can get easily, I like the Vandoren B45 and some of the Selmers. (C* is very open, B* is medium and HS* is a more closed, classical mouthpiece.)
You might put a couple of bad mouthpieces in there for comparison. The brand almost doesn't matter (most of the mass-production companies turn out a stinker now and then), but the Bundy and the Goldentone come to mind as consistently fairly bad to very bad.

Sounds like a good list. They are all pretty readily available. Since each make a variety of models and facings, I would likely go with the most popular for each.
I would also suggest considering trying those made by David McClune.

Yes, I like the Mcclune's, I always stocked three different facing for my students to try. Definitely several Vandoren's because they're inexpensive and very good. I usually stocked about 12 different MPs and facings for my students when I taught at Peabody because they were advanced students but I stocked close to that even before when I was only at Towson and taught high school students as well. You have to think of price and how advanced the students are. Makes little sense for a student to pay $200 - $500 when they're just playing for fun when they can find a good MP that gives them a good solid tone and plays in tune and articulates well for less than $100. I used to try every new mouthpiece as they came on the market and I'd buy it if I liked it myself and thought it might be good for students. True, I still have several that I've had for 20 years because I've never had a student that sounded as good on it as they would on something else, the price of doing business, or teaching in this case. Like Russianoff, most of my students used different MPs, only a few used a Morgan as I do. Maybe one in ten. As a matter of fact I found that one when I was on tour in NY and went to Weiners to try out new MPs on a day off. Worked for me. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

I like your original list, but I would definitely say replace one of them (not smith! haha) with a Vandoren. They are good mouthpieces, even though I believe customs are better.

Well, staying well below the $200 and up range for the customs, I get the following.
Six below $50 for beginners:
Fobes Debut
Behn Overture
Yamaha 4C
J&D Hite Premier
McClune Beginner
Gennusa Mezzo
Six non-Vandoren in the $50-$125 range:
Fobes Nova
Gennusa Excellente
Grabner Intermezzo
Hawkins "Student"
McClune Lyceum
J&D Hite Artist
I could think of six just from Vandoren alone (but don't forget their individual variations like the 13 series, and lyre and dot designations):
B45
5RV
M13
M15
M30
B40

Dave,
I infer, from the list in your original post, that you are looking for mouthpieces for relatively advanced students. To provide variety for that kind of student to select from, I suspect you might be better off choosing one of the makers on your list (and I'm not sure it matters which one) and offering a variety of that maker's facings -- e.g., Smith Old Chedeville 1*, 1, 1+, (1++), Kaspar Style, Personal Model; or Behn Artist Close, Medium, Open.
If you are trying to accomplish what I think you are, I think you want to provide your students with a range of resistances in the mouthpiece selection. The problem with including one mouthpiece from several different makers is that you may wind up with less variety than you want. For example (and I'm sure some people will have different experience), for me a Fobes CF+ feels fairly similar to a Greg Smith Old Chedeville 1 (though the Smith plays at slightly lower pitch for me and the Fobes seems just a little brighter). On the other hand, for me, a Smith Kaspar plays very similar to a Bay MO-M. I think I could probably take any one of your six custom makers and find one of their mouthpieces that I could be very happy with -- I know that's true for the three that I've tried it with: Smith, Fobes and Lomax.
At the very least, if I were you, I would make sure I had variety in facing lengths and tip openings.
Best regards,
jnk
