 Searching for Two Recordings
Author: kdk
Date:   2011-08-20 20:18

I'm looking for two recordings that Anthony Gigliotti made with the Taipei Symphony. One includes clarinet concerti by Rochberg and Argento. The other has a Capriccio for Clarinet and Orchestra, also by Argento, and something not named by Rochberg. Amazon lists both but indicates they are "currently unavailable." They were apparently both issued on the Bravo label.

Thanks in advance.

Karl

There is only one recording: Argento, Capriccio (Rossini in Paris) and Rochberg, Concerto. If blow up the album cover for the "Two Concertos" listing, you'll see that the Argento "Concerto" is, in reality, the Capriccio. The different dates could refer to an original release and a re-release.

Amazon didn't show cover art for the second recording when I looked on Saturday morning, and now when I do the same search again 36 hours later I only see the one. I suspected there was only one mostly because of what I know of their history. The A.M. Gigliotti website (run by his widow) shows only the one I've asked about and another (also listed on Amazon) that contains the Strauss Duo Concertino and two Bassoon concerti with Mark Gigliotti (Anthony's son) as bassoonist, which Amazon indicates is available through them.

Thanks for the response.

Amazon also shows a Gigliotti recording of the Beethoven, Brahms and Glinka Trios on Bravo. For each of the three Bravo recordings, Amazon shows two listings, one an import without the album cover and one with no import designation but an album cover. Perhaps they obtained them from two different sources.

Arkiv Music lists the Argento/Rochberg recording as "backorder" and "usually ships in one to two weeks." You could try them but my guess is that the recording has been on back order for a long time and that it really is POP. Still, it might be worth a try.

Best regards,
jnk

Yes, I don't know when the chamber music recording was made - whether on an even earlier trip than the Strauss session (or maybe even here at some earlier date) or during Gigliotti's last trip over there when, I think, he recorded the Rochberg and Argento shortly before he died. I wonder what Hung-Kuan Chen's relationship is to Felix Chiu-Sen Chen, the conductor for the two orchestral CDs.
