I have a wooden Pruefer clarinet that I inherited from my dad. I was trying to find out more information about the make, the company, and the year created. The serial number is 4168 but I am kind of confused on how to find out when it was made. Any help would be great!

Pruefer clarinets were made in Providence, RI from the early 1930's until the 1970's when the factory burned down. By most accounts they were one of the better American manufacturers. They are probably best know for their hard rubber clarinets but did make some wood models as well. Their wooden clarinets often seem similar to the early Penzel-Mueller clarinets, likely due to the fact that G. Pruefer worked at P-M before starting his own company.

I have a wood Pruefer A clarinet (serial no. 2495) that I bought on the unnameable website about 6 years ago for, I believe, $270. With a partial overhaul it plays nicely -- even though I don't have much need for it.
