 "Vintage" Winslow ligs.......
Author: William

Just to clarify what I see in a lot of ads for Johns ligatures, what most advertise as "vintage" should really be, "genuine". For me--who was one of the first to try his ligatures in our Municipal Band--the vintage ligatures are those with the slightly larger, table with the detachable bands. The are a bit bulkier than his latter solid band models, but produce a more resonate tone quality, especially on the saxophone. John even suggested that they--his original models--were "perhaps better" than the easier to manufacture single band ones he later began making. I use the older models exclusively on my sax mouthpieces--metal & rubber--and am looking for one for my bass clarinet. But my main point of "contention" is that the ligs being advertised as "vintage" are mostly those of his latter design and not his originals with the detachable mouthpiece band. They are genuine ligs, but not *original*--or what I call, vintage.

fwiw, I do not like the Winslow ligature on my soprano clarinets, but use an original one with my Eb clarinet and a "genuine" with my bass.
