The view of the huckster room and all the ambient chatter made me jealous of all you lucky folks who attended the fest! As for the video -- clever idea, well performed at the very beginning and the very end, but the middle is tedious. I'd like to see the duelers repeat with a better-edited sketch in a less distracting venue.

I agree. Fun but far too long, and it also took too long to figure out that a trumpet player was doing at a clarinet festival. I quickly skipped forward 60 seconds at a time until the tall guy fired his weapon. The hat appropriation at the end was a nice capper.

Yeah, the piece does get a bit long, though I think the staring portion is way more effective in person than in video.
He had taken my hat from my cold, dead hands a while earlier outside the other exhibit hall, I had to get it back.

Yes, the hat was a fine touch. I loved that sudden blast and the stunt fall, although I'm amazed someone would try that move with his bass clarinet in his hands. He must have a lot of confidence in his own coordination! (If you do a more formal version, you could run a crawl at the end saying that no bass clarinets were harmed in the filming ....) Circling around each other with prowling-steps at the beginning was good, too.
The timing issue comes about because the staring session just lasts too long, and from the viewer's point of view it's not a tense, silent stare -- we're seeing miscellaneous people walk through the shot, hearing conversations from more people off-camera, etc..

About half the people around were really into it, and the other half were totally oblivious. That disconnect was kinda cool, in my opinion, though I've also done this piece in a completely silent hall, where the staring portion is a lot more effective.
Earlier in the day, it was much quieter for our first play of it (in the entry of the Grand Salon), with the tension broken by a bass clarinetist warming up (which offered a sudden brief "wait, did someone shoot?" freakout moment).

What was interesting is how clarinet fest looks different from what I thought it would be. For some reason I assumed it was like a much smaller version of Musikmesse but it's completely different.

Not sure what bass you have but with a Buffet there's also that small hole in the bell to close. A friend of mine just recently found out about the ping pong ball trick recently during our concert. He used the ball for something else (a percussion thingie) but then put it in his tenor sax and played low Bb. It jumped out (softly) from the sax.

Indeed. Was bummed at first to have my booth in the "overflow" hall, but our air conditioning worked better and we could hear ourselves think. Also made it much easier to hold an impromptu slap-tonguing workshop on Saturday afternoon.

That area was far less annoying.
I wish the ICA would have these things in nice Hotels like the Flute Association does.
Same location for everything, including the room. Though this past festival got me in great shape, so that's a win.
