Exploring the Mind Through Music

I thought others might be interested in these videos from Rice University's 2011 Exploring the Mind Through Music conference:

Although not specifically clarinet related, I did the video recording/editing and think there are a lot of interesting ideas about how and why we interact with music.

I recommend watching in 720p/fullscreen if your Internet connection isn't too slow.

This reminds me of what I thought was a fascinating PBS special on music and the brain, featuring some otherwise extremely mentally challenged individuals who have near genius capabilities in music.

Oliver Sachs, the neurologist featured, has written some fascinating books http://www.pbs.org/wnet/musicinstinct/video/music-and-the-brain/scientist-oliver-sacks-on-musical-cognition/45/ on rare neurological disorders--like people who can't recognize faces-

He's quite the music lover too.

Benjamin, thanks for posting this. I watched some of the first presentation, and I bookmarked the site for future viewing.

I wasn't familiar with the concept of synesthesia (especially sound-color synesthesia) until recently, but it's an interesting phenomenon. I didn't realize that many famous musicians have/had it, including Leonard Bernstein, Rimsky-Korsakov, Franz Liszt, Billy Joel, and Duke Ellington.

I don't think I have sound-color synesthesia, but I do remember my elementary school art classroom when the teacher put on music and asked us to use colors to illustrate what we heard. That was an assignment I enjoyed.
