 Fair price on used R13?
Author: knoxville322

I'm looking for a used R13 for a high school student. I found one on Craigslist - bought new in 2005, only played for 2 years by a student, kept indoors, #530XXX, nickel keys. The asking price is $1750. That seems fairly high to me. If the horn is on good playing condition, what is the consensus on a "fair price?"

Doubt that you'll get a consensus but if you want my opinion email me.

The gentlemen from Knoxville:

Ebay is often a useful place to help pin point fair market value.

Here's a list of recently completed auctions of used R13's.

http://completed.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=used+R13+buffet&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=See-All-Categories&_okw=used+R13+buffet&_oexkw=&_adv=1&LH_Complete=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=200&_fpos=Zip+code&_fsct=&LH_SALE_CURRENCY=0&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50

This is not an offer to buy or sell. None of these auctions are in any way connected to me, nor is this an endorsement or criticism of ebay.

I've had good results on ebay, but suggest that buyer beware at all times.

Good luck!

I have been looking around at the prices for some students. I have seen them ranging from $1200 to a little over $2000, depending on age and condition.

A brand spankin' new instrument is $2600 or in that ballpark. That's the base, nickel-plated keys, nothing crazy. The standard R-13.

If you think that two years of playing and 6 years since manufacturing warrants that price than maybe it does. Without you going to play the instrument and hear how it sounds it's hard to put a pricetag on it. To me $1,500-$1,700 is reasonable for that type of horn.

$1700 isnt that bad for a horn that was only used for 2 years, considering they go for about double that now brand new. If it's in playable condition with no problems, that's very reasonable to me.

Brand spankin' new is more like $3400 for nickel keys -- the price is fair and would actually be an attractive one if the instrument has good characteristics.

James said, "Brand spankin' new is more like $3400 for nickel keys".

I checked several places (WWBW for one), and the nickel plated ones are less than $2800. The silver plated ones are $3125.

Even new R13s vary tremendously. In particular, the intonation can be inconsistent. As Keith Stein said, a mouthpiece [or clarinet] that plays out of tune is worthless, no matter how well it plays otherwise. In my opinion, you should NEVER buy a clarinet (particularly an R13) without an ironclad WRITTEN agreement that you can return it for a full refund for any reason, or for no reason.

For more, see http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=275609&t=275585.

As a minor matter, I find nickel-plated keys to be too slippery, and I also have a minor allergy to nickel. You should compare the feel of nickel and silver before making your decision.

I am a believer in purchasing a used R13 clarinet with the help of a professional . I actually do, from time to time, sell R13 clarinets on Ebay and always offer a full refund, a 7 day trial period, and return shipping if the buyer is not completely satisfied. I currently play on a R13, used, and have played used instruments for many years. If a person is purchasing a new R13, Lisa Argiris and Walter Grabner are good sources of very good, hand picked instruments. Many players in my area have depended on Lisa for great instruments over the years and are completely satisfied . Just my opinion and I am not connected with either person from a business perspective in any way. I also own a great playing Tosca Greenline that I picked off the Muncy Winds display rack at a recent clarinet convention and am completely pleased with it.

As a generalization, I would say high end of reasonable. Traditionally, relatively recent used Buffets tend to go for around 60% of new street price. (Other brands normally don't bring much above 50%.) Generally, I find that where used instruments are involved, unless you get extremely lucky, you can get two-out-of-the-following-three: (1) high quality, (2) low price, (3) immediate purchase. You can probably find a comparable R13 for $1,100 - $1,200 but you will likely have to be patient to do it.

Best regards,
jnk

My apologies CarlT -- back when Buffet instituted minimum pricing a couple of years back $3400 was the minimum price. I'm glad to see it has come down to something a bit more reasonable.

James - I think what you quoted is the current MSRP but I don't know of any store that sells them for that high. They're mostly in that $2,500 - $3,000 range.

if you get to try it, then probably around 1500. if you don't (like ebay), then i'd say it can go anywhere between 1000-1300.

if you get older buffet R13s, sometimes (when you get lucky) it only goes to 850ish. one time i got really lucky and i got a real good one for 650!!
