Anyone ever take golf lessons? Did you feel like a pretzel when you were in position to swing?
In yesterday's CL lesson, after a weeks practice with the MP alone, I was instructed that I should raise the back part of my tongue in order to avoid squeaks - man what a diference in makes just for the note "E".
So, I am to push down as hard as I can with my upper lip, keep my chin straight and forward, keep my tongue raised in the back and down in the front, and keep a constant airflow over the reed.
Ain't it great: to put ourselves through this kind of gymnastics to produce wonderfull sounds? Oh well! Golf is fun too.

Golf is Great! I love golf I play all the time during the summer. I have played since I was 6 years old and truly enjoy it. Keep it up and you'll find youself stuck with it.

Arnold Jacobs, tubist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and noted expert on breath control, once said that "to analyze is to paralyze." In other words, if we worry too much about the "correct" way to do something, it may be more difficult to actually start. There is a lot of merit in preliminary instruction about tone production, pointy chin, tongue position, hand position, reed preparation and on and on, but it is more important--as the athletic shoe adverisment says--to JUST DO IT. Put the clarinet together and PLAY. Enjoy, and develop the necessary skills (and your backswing) as you play music and enjoy the game. And try not to throw your clarinet into the first water hazard you encounter. Good clariputting.

I LOVE IT. Thanks for the advice William (and Arnold).............it *is* my nature to over analyze the situation.
