Need a simple fix and cleaning, help?

Hello,

I am the owner of a cheap student clarinet. I've been meaning to get back into playing, but upon digging out the ol' clarinet, I noticed that I couldn't get all of the sound out of it because of a missing pad. It's also just kind of dirty.

I'm hoping to bring it somewhere to be serviced. The goal here is cheap as possible. I just want my instrument to work again by getting a new pad and a cleaning.

I live in New York City. Does anyone have suggestions as to where I could bring it and get the fixes I need for cheap?

Thanks!

Easy, IMHO.

Mark Kasten of Weiner Music in Mineola, out on L.I. at 168 Jericho Turnpike--cross streets Mineola Blvd to the West, Willis Ave to the East.

Mark's honest, knowledgeable, and while Weiner does a large high end musical instrument sales/repair/accessories internet business, I think they also do school instruments too--meaning if you tell Mark to just price getting the thing up to speed he'll give you a competitive honest quote on just that.

I've transacted with Weiner since the late 1970's. While buyer beware is my general advice to all, Weiner has always been excellent for me.

Remember, if you bring the horn to 48th St. in Manhattan, you may end up paying "48th St in Manhattan" rents for getting your horn serviced.

Best of luck getting the horn up to speed w/o breaking the bank.

Thank you very much for the input. However, I don't have a car, so I'm limited pretty much to the city and boroughs. I know this means that I'm generally going to be paying more, but I don't really have the option of traveling outside the city.

If anyone has recommendations in Queens, Brooklyn or Manhattan, I'd be much obliged. Remember, the goal is just to get the thing in working order and to pay as little as possible. I'm a cheapskate, but I'm just using it to catch up and learn a bit. If I can do that, a nice new clarinet might be in order.

In the mean time, I might try to find a way to get out on Long Island and check out your guy, ThePerfectReed. Thanks.

It's been a long time but the last time I went to Weiners I was able to go by rail. Call them and they will give you directions. You could also call some music stores in NY and ask them how much it cost to repad a student clarinet. The phone book works wonders that way. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

I'll check out how to get there by rail. Probably LIRR. That means more costs and time! But it's worth checking into, thanks.

Costs and time will still be less with Weiner than downtown, and a better job. Mark K is great.

You'll probably get a lot of offers if you put your email address in your profile.
